"Fair enough," he nodded as the waitress eventually returned with their drinks, placing them neatly in front of them. Daniel listed two items off the menu and the man nodded, jotting it all down in a little notebook with a stubby pencil. The place was moderately busy but it seemed to be lucky enough to not have many kids. "Thank you." It was sharing platter.
"No problem, Sir. Enjoy your meal," the man nodded as he went to file the food order. Daniel smiled and nodded before peering back at her, "So, any particular places in the world you wan to explore?"

She smiled and picked up her glass, taking a sip of the cool beverage to wet her mouth before answering. "Egypt. I've always wanted to go there, to see the pyramids, see tombs of mummified kings and queens of ancient times." She smiled a little and looked down at the ground. "That's probably what most historians say though, so you've probably heard that kind of answer about a million times." She smiled again and looked at him, took another sip of her drink and carried on speaking. "But most of all, I want to find something that my grandfather helped to find in Giza. It was Nineteen twenty eight, and he was one of many local villagers that was involved in a huge archaeological dig. They found these cover stones with pictographs that no one had ever seen before, and ancient hieroglyphs that no one could read. And under that, they found this great big ring object. I've got a photo of him in front of this thing back at home. I would love to know what it is, or where it's gone. That's my true dream."

Daniel smiled and nodded lightly, he had indeed. Egypt. The one place in the world most renowned as the archaeological epicentre of the world. Perhaps the universe too in some ways, but she wasn't to know that. For numerous reasons it attracted archaeologists from around the world to its sands and revealed monuments even though there was just as much if not more in the far flung places of good old Terra Firma for people to discover. It always came down to that really, so it really wasn't any surprise to Daniel that Taryn had an interest too. Before, he thought it more academical but as she spoke of her relations and events that he knew only too well, it was quite clearly stemming from something much more than that.
Something he was not at liberty to reveal to her the full extent of what really at that dig in Giza. The fact that she even had any photographic evidence was any real wonder and he wondered if that might be one of the same photographs that Catherine owned. “Really? That does sound very interesting, wouldn't mind seeing that photo.” His voice was honest and intent genuine, he really did want to see it and he really did find her story interesting. Especially when the Stargate was a close guarded Military secret even back in those days. No one wanted the Germans getting their hands on it and most knew that Adolph Hitler had a vested interest in mythical artefacts. Most thought that fact mostly a whimsical outlet, one you'd readily believe out of an Indiana Jones movie. Either way, had Hitler's archaeologists found it and got it to work, the war could have had a far more drastic and destructive result. He was grateful to Mitchell's own blood relative that that was not the case and that the Stargate had found its way across the Atlantic.
“You said he was a local villager... does that mean your family has roots back in Egypt then?” It wasn't uncommon, local help was far cheaper both in labour and to keep mouths shut then it was to bring out labour from home which would have tipped off German spies even more.

Taryn nodded her head slowly, toying with the thin stem of her glass as she spoke. "Yeah. He moved to America after he heard that this object was moved. From what my father told me there were rumours that this thing was some kind of weapon and it was moved near the beginning to World War II so that the Germans wouldn't get it. He tried to follow it, but found my grandmother instead. He gave up looking for it to raise a family and earn money to support them. He died of a stroke before I was born. I would have loved to have known him." She took a sip of her drink. "The photo is on my bookcase back at home." She took another sip.

Daniel listened and nodded, "Family's important," he replied with a soft smile. It was important, even those that weren't family by blood but were so anyways. "I'm sure he'd be very proud of you," he replied with a nod.
After a few moments, their food arrived and the waiter went to refresh their drinks. They were refreshed, leaving Daniel and Taryn to settle down and eat. Daniel cut slowly into his steak and chewed the chunk slowly. True to the restaurant's reputation, it was cooked to perfection.
"How's your meal? All good?"

She smiled as she tucked into her own part of the sharing platter. "It's lovely. An excellent choice you made, Daniel." She raised her glass and sipped it slowly before returning to the plate full of food, enjoying every mouthful that she ate. "Anyway, enough about me... tell me something about you? How did you end up here in Colorado? I'm pretty sure there isn't much here for an archaeologist."

"Oh, perhaps not so much fieldwise but it's mostly advisory," he replied, smiling, nodding as he continued to eat. "Besides, I like the scenery here,"

"Advisory? Who are you advising?" She questioned, raising her eyebrows at him as she tucked into the onion rings and then the chicken goujons.

"Local business," he replied, smiling as he lifted his drink and drank deeply before settling it back down again. "Been here a good, few years now. First year was hard... away from what I was very much used to but now, I've grown to love it here. And, it still has its moments" he smiled, looking at her.

She shrugged her shoulders slightly. "You're right, this town does have it's qualities." She grinned and popped a chip into her mouth. "Good food, a very useful library and nice people."

"It certainly does," Daniel smiled before he continued on his meal of steak and chips, the restaurant's music acting as a decent background noise for them all to listen to. He was still quite curious how close she was to a spark of truth and yet knew nothing about it enough to realise it all. Perhaps a bit fortunate on the SGC's behalf... but still. He thought for a long moment, "So, what are your plans for the future then?" he asked, after washing down his mouthful with his drink.

She thought for a moment or two, swirling her drink around in the glass before taking a sip. "Maybe try and carry on what my grandfather was doing.... try and find this object and try and work out why it was moved and what it is. Ever since seeing that photo I've got this image in my mind that when it was first made it was covered with gold and may have been some fancy burial object. It don't believe the stories that it was a weapon, it doesn't look like a weapon. To me it looks more like an archway of some kind, an archway to the afterlife, hence my burial theory." She took another sip and let out a soft sigh. "But it's just a theory. And in all reality, I'll probably never find it. I'm not going to waste my career or life on crazy theories. So I'll have to think on something else to do, and just keep those images in my head of this gold covered archway allowing the dead to get to the afterlife." She laughed a little realising she probably sounded a little crazy in her theory. She looked down at the table, shaking her head and took in a long breath looking at her new friend. "Listen to me, I probably sound like a complete nutter!"

Daniel wore a little smile upon his face. He knew what it was like where you spouted a theory based on what others believed to be wildly outrageous and consequently everyone thought you a crazy nutter destined for the looney bin. Thankfully, he had one person in his life that had believed him and helped him to open his eyes to so much more. "Trust me, you're know the only one to feel like that from time to time. We can only imagine or theorise so much about Earth's past. Some theories are just that much... wilder than others." he replied, nodding with total understanding. Her theory for the Stargate to be an way to the afterlife wasn't that far out of context. In some religions or cultures that the team had come across over the years, it had been exactly that. A way to the afterlife or to the Gods of the universe. She was insanely close yet still so far. Some might call that tantalising.
"Well, I hope something work out for you, Taryn. i really do," he was genuine, he really did care to see where life would lead her. Before long he finished his steak and chips, leaning back in the chair, holding his drink.

"Thanks, Daniel." She smiled back and finished off her meal. Wiping her mouth on her linen serviette to remove any stray crumbs or sauce she picked up her glass and finished off her drink. "That was a delicious meal."

"I can't fault them for food or service," he nodded, smiling. It was the team's go to restaurant and they could never usually be faulted for bad food or service. He finished his drink and settled the glass on the table. "You wanting desert or?" he asked, looking towards her questioningly.

Daniel smiled and nodded before he caught the eye of their waiter and asked for the cheque, "Of course, Sir." The man and went off weaving through tables before returning a little while later. Daniel paid and they were good to go. It wasn't long before they were walking back to the car.

Night had fallen and Taryn paused for a moment to look up at the cloudless sky. The stars were shining brightly and she could easily pick out some of the constellations. "Good Evening, Orion." She spoke to the great hunter. "Taurus, and Cassiopeia." She smiled as she named the ones she recognised. "Do ever wonder if there are other planets out there with aliens living on them?" She queried, still looking up.

The temptation to let the cat of the bag was pretty huge but there were more complications if he did. He glanced upwards after she spoke and smiled. He had passed Orion so many times along with many other constellations during his time going through wormholes and travelling through space. "There's a high mathmatical chance, it's always nice to think we're not alone in space," he nodded, "perhaps they're wondering the same thing."

A few minutes later and she was getting out of the car, searching around in her handbag for her keys. "Would you like to come in for a coffee? Or at least come and see that photo?" She asked as she finally found what she was looking for.

He stopped the engine and settled back into the seat, resting his feet for a moment before he looked to her. He thought for a moment and smiled, "Sure, I'd like that," he nodded, the photograph would be ample enough in proof. He removed the key from the starter and unbuckled before he got out of his car. He smiled before he followed her up to the door of her apartment/house.

She opened the door and switched on the lights in the hall before moving into the lounge and switching on those lights, letting Daniel enter in his own time. Heading straight for the bookcase she picked up the silver photo frame and looked at the photo for a few seconds before turning and moving to her guest, holding it out for him to take. Pointing with her other finger she tapped the glass above one young man; second from the right in the front row. "That's my grandfather." She stated. "I believe he was just sixteen at the time." She turned, dumping her bag on the sofa before moving into the kitchen and turning on a light there, beginning to make them both coffees.

Daniel followed her in slowly pocketing his keys and closing the door behind him. He nodded as she brought the photograph in question and he took it gently, peering at it studiously as she pointed her grandfather out of the lineup that looked back up at him. He recognised a couple of faces of the others from photograph of the expedition left by Catherine's own, over which Daniel had spent a long time in looking at.
"He must have been in his element," he smiled as he followed her to kitchen, leaning on the doorframe. "My parents would have loved to have been there, before their time though," whilst he couldn't speak in truth about Giza, the sentiment about his folks was genuine. His eyes dropped, studying the picture again, looking for all the smallest clues.

Taryn switched on the kettle and grabbed two mugs from an overhead cabinet. "How do you like your coffee?" She called as she placed a spoonful of the instant coffee granules into one mug and a teabag into the other one. She glanced to the kettle as it began to boil and was near to turning itself off. Reaching for a blue ceramic lidded jar she placed a spoonful of sugar in with the teabag and waited for an answer from her guest.

He didn't respond for a moment before he looked up, blinking, like a deer in headlights. The question rang inside his head, "Oh, black, just a littler sugar" he nodded with a smile. "Thanks," he watched her for a moment.
==
Lucius Vorenus stood by his horse, Brutus, a bay-brown stallion of 15hh, running a hand down the horse's neck. The animal had since been brushed clean, fed and watered and Lucius had spent a while picking small stones out of the hooves. A lot of care for a horse that by rights wasn't his. His legionaries also used to have horses before the crossing into the facility they were in now but they had perished in the fire rain. Brutus had belonged to the Tribune that had been with his cohort but the man had given the feisty animal to him, the Centurion's mission was that important and in turn Lucius hadn't been able to bring himself to leave the animal behind. Brutus was a survivor just as much as his men and himself were.
He chuckled as the horse nibbled at his hand, "Easy boy, i'm not food,"
"Try telling him that"
Lucius turned at the voice, its bearer feminine and amused as his eyes rested on the woman with the black hair. He couldn't remember if he had been given her name but she had been the one to pilfer his trinket before. She was leaning against the door frame and he couldn't even guess how long she'd been there watching him. He patted Brutus' neck.
"I'm a little unused to his company," he conceded.

Nodding her head, she sprinkled a little sugar into the coffee mug just as the kettle clicked. She filled both cups nearly to full with the boiling water before grabbing some milk from the fridge and adding a splash of it to her tea. With both drinks made she picked them up and headed back to the sitting room. "Here you go." She said as she held out the coffee mug for Daniel to take.

"It's a lovely creature. Surprised General O'Neill has allowed you to see him." Vala added, remaining leaning against the door frame. Her arms crossed over her chest. She was bored, that much was obvious, but these guests were interesting to her.. especially with their fancy looking clothes that she could probably make some profit out of. With Daniel off base she was able to get herself into a little more trouble as he was the only one she ever really listened to.

He followed her to the room making sure he wasn't in the way before he smiled and took the mug carefully from her when it was offered. "Thanks," he made to find a seat and eased into it. after a few moments he sipped it and nodded, it was just right. "So, now that your thesis is all done, what's your next plan?" he asked curious.
(can't remember if he asjed it already hey ho)
---
Lucius glanced to the equine of whom was sniffing about where his sword belt would usually be hung and he gently pushed the large head away. He nodded slowly, "I rather suppose he is," he agreed and glanced back to Vala with that self same edginess. It wasn't born from fear or anything to that effect but out of sadness. He didn't know if Julia had made it out or whether she had perished along with their daughter. He had no way to know that in truth that his wife and daughter were both in the afterlife.
"Let me out on good behaviour?" he shrugged, "Not much else for us to do... " Frankly, the waiting to know the news from their sky ship was killing him and like his legionnaries, he was seeking distraction from the worried questions running through his mind.

Taryn shrugged her shoulders slightly and took a sip of her tea. "Not entirely sure. I'll have to see if anything pops up over the next couple of weeks." She glanced to the photo that was still in Daniel's hand. "Until then, I might try and see if I can locate that thing. I know it's what my grandfather would have wanted."
----
Vala took a hesitant step towards the equine, having not met one before she didn't really know what it was or what it was capable of. "Does it have a name?"
