Daniel nodded, he would be in the same frame of mind if he were in her place. Considering what she was going to be searching for had already been found and safely stored, he wished her all the best. No matter how tempting it would be to tell her all about it as the archaeologist in him would have of him, it would be committing an offence. Vorenus' words oddly fleeting about his mind. He leaned forth and placed the photograph on the table, "I'm sure you'll do him proud. I could put the word round, see what my word can do for you, if you like?" he offered.
---
He watched her approach and turned sideways, placing a hand on the bay's shoulder to steady him as he shifted his stance. He nodded, "Brutus, but he's a gentle enough creature. Just spirited," he replied with a smile at her. "Come, he won't bite," he said, his soft tone of voice an odd contrast with his rugged features.

She thought for a second, part of her wanted to say 'no', for her to search for the thing on her own. That would be a great achievement for her. Glancing at the photo, she looked at her grandfather then looked at Daniel, looking into his eyes and nodded her head. She had found a friend and was certain she could trust him. "Thanks." She accepted his offer, nodding her head.
-----
"He's big." Vala replied, still being wary of the creature. "I think i'll keep my distance."

"I'll see what I can do," he nodded, smiling. Whilst he couldn't direct her to the SGC, there were still other avenues. He sipped his coffee and smiled, it was good.
---
He looked at her and smiled before extending a hand, "I won't let him hurt you. Promise," he nodded as the horse stood there, seeming to interest itself more in the feed that had been provided.

"Thank you." She smiled at him and took another sip of her tea. After a few seconds she lifted herself onto tiptoes and lighly kissed Daniel's left cheek. "You have been very kind to me these last couple of days."
------
Vala laughed nervously and put her hands up to stop him. "I have hunted many a creature, I know how unpredictable they can be."

He blinked as she kissed his cheek and he looked towards her and blushed slightly, "Anyone else in the profession would do the same" he replied softly. ----
He shrugged, dropping the hand, "Unpredictable," he echoed and peered at the horse a long moment he rest his forehead on the horse's shoulder. "He's carried me and survived. I owe him as much as I owe your people. I will not be surprised if one can predict that this horse, this beast, will outlive me." He looked to her and smiled faintly before he moved away from the equine and towards her but maintained a distance. Her similarity to his wife was uncanny and his breath caught in his throat.

Taryn wetted her lips as her cheeks began to glow red with embarrassment. She shook her head. "No... I don't think they would. You're different, Daniel. I don't know why you are, but I can just tell you're different from all the others. There's something about you."
-----
"Do you think that's wise, turning your back on a creature?" She queried, keeping a close eye on both the horse and Vorenus.

Daniel's brow lifted with interest though he knew he had undergone what most of his kind would never dream of, "Oh?" he queried
---
"He might not belong to me... but I've been around him long enough to know he'd not harm me much less you, my lady," he nodded with a smile before he peered at the ground.

She cleared her throat and took a step back, knowing that she had probably already said and done too much. She only hoped she hadn't scared him off. She picked up the photo from the table and returned it to it's place on the bookshelf. She may not be the tidiest of people, but that photo had a certain place to live.
----
"Name's Vala." She smiled, still watching the horse, curious by the creature. At the moment it certainly seemed docile.

He watched her for a moment and smiled, "I'm not that different am I?" he tilted his head.
---
"An honour," he nodded, "Despite the theivery," he looked at her and winked. He wasn't offended by her deed. "Lucius," he nodded looking at her.

She turned to look at him. "Like I said... I don't know what it is about you... but there is certainly something different about you. Maybe if we meet again a few more times I'll figure out what it is." She tilted her head to one side. "At the moment I just can't put my finger on it."
----
Vala laughed nervously as he reminded her of her previous attempt to make some money. "Sorry about that. It looked expensive." She was fishing for information, trying to find out just what the object was worth. Maybe she'd try again when she had a little more time and no Daniel watching her every move.

"Well, I'd like that. Always interested in new folk to the profession," he nodded, smiling at her.
---
"I'm just a soldier with a soldier's wage," he said softly staring at the horse now, "Julia... she's the wealthy one... but like you, she has head for danger," he looked at her and smiled.

Taryn smiled and finished off her tea, returning her empty mug to the kitchen, placing it by the sink ready to be washed up at a later date.
----
"Julia?" That was a name that Vala hadn't heard mentioned yet, and it was in her nature to be a very curious woman.

Daniel ducked his head smiling before he went to finish his coffee and joined her, adding his to hers. "I'm glad you, ah, bumped into me," he nodded
---
"My.... My Wife... I don't know if she made it through the fire rain," he breathed.

"I'm glad you took out the book I needed from the library."
-----
Vala lowered her head. "I'm sorry." She apologised, having some sort of understanding how he must be feeling, unaware of his loved one's fate.

Daniel smiled and nodded, "Very good book" he murmured
--
He looked at her and nodded, "My gratitude. The gods will let me know soon enough," he replied, his rugged features softening, vulnerable as he stared at the horse. "How many more days...?" he sighed

"Very useful book." She added and smiled softly at her guest.
-----
Vala shook her head. "Not to ruin your culture... but all the Gods I've met have just been alien parasites in a host body enslaving humans for their own gains." Out of anyone on the base, Vala Mal Doran had the most experience with Stargate's mega enemy.

He chuckled, "Indeed" he agreed and glanced at his watch. "I should get going. It was a pleasure, Taryn. I really enjoyed tonight," he nodded.
---
Lucius looked at her with confusion, "Something tells me we've been fortunate thus far..." his eyes searched hers.

She sighed a little, reluctant to have him leave, but knew that the night had to end. "Me too. I hope we meet again soon."
-----
"Until now." She replied, referring to the 'fire rain' that Vorenus had described to her. It sounded too much like Goa'uld hata'ak weapon's fire to her.

"I hope so too," he moved towards the door with the feeling she'd follow, "If you need to ask anything, just give me a text," he nodded and hesitated for a moment before he leaned forwards and kised her cheek.
----
He sighed heavily, "not knowing... It's more than I can bear," he turned away pulling the medallion free and peering to it. "You look very much like her, Vala"

As he moved for the door, she followed, a pace or two behind. When he turned and kissed her cheek she closed her eyes and kissed his cheek back. She was blushing now, she could feel it. "I've got your number." She nodded.
-----
She knew the likelihood was slim, but she had to try and give some sort of comfort to the man. "I hope she's survived. I hope many of your people have."

He smiled and nodded as he fished his car keys from his pocket, "Aye. Till next time then," he opened the door, and stepped down
----
He looked to her and nodded, pocketing the trinket, "Thank you. I hope so as well,"

"Good night, Daniel." She leaned against the door frame, watching him.
-----
"I should be going." And with that, Vala turned and left the room. It was clear that talking about the Goa'uld and what they did and what she had witnessed as a host still left wounds with her.

"Good night," he nodded and turned for his car, getting in and starting the engine. HE waved before he drove off for home.
---
He looked at her and nodded, bowing his head, "My lady." He watched her go before he sighed and headed out himself, his usual guard following him round back to his room.

Once he was gone she closed the door and sighed heavily. Was she being crazy? Falling for a guy she had known less than two days? Grabbing a glass of white wine she turned off the lights and headed to bed.
-----
The next morning, General O'Neill arrived on the base. He was dressed in a dark blue t-shirt and jeans, but he was heading off to the men's locker room to change. His usual choice of attire on base was the green BDU as he didn't care much for the standard General uniform that others like Hammond and Landry had used before him. After getting off the lift he turned down a corridor, whistling as he headed for the locker room. His whistling and walking were soon interrupted but an airman stumbling along in front of him. For a split second jack didn't quite know what to do till he saw the airman fall to knees. Dashing forward the General was with the younger man in just a few seconds. "Hey, you ok?" He asked, helping to hold him up so he didn't hit his head. He got no reply as the man lost consciousness in his arms, leaving Jack in an awkward position on his own. "Hey! Help!" O'Neill shouted to hopefully get some attention. "I need Doctor Lam down here immediately!"

Two more airmen were turning the corner before they saw the General. One rushed over to help Jack whilst the other got to the nearestcommunication relay and called the Doctor down. Moments later Doctor Lam was rushing with two orderlies in tow holding a stretcher between them. "Out of the way!" She cried before joining Jack, quickly setting about checking the fallen man's vitals. "What happened?" she asked.

Jack shook his head. "He just collapsed. No idea what happened before then." He replied, staying close to be able to give assistance if she needed it. "What do you think it could be?"

She checked his pulse, it was irregular and she frowned before she waved at the orderlies to come over. They helped her get the airmanon the stretcher, "I won't know more until i can runmore tests. It could be anything from dehydration to a viral infection,"

"will do! Come on let's get him back," she nodded and with that they got the man to the infirmary before running their tests.

Jack sighed heavily and headed to the men's locker room to change. Quickly. He then went up to his office and waited. His biggest fear right now was that whatever had affected the airman earlier was a virus and he'd have to put the bade on lockdown. If it was a virus, then it had most likely come through with Vorenus and his men. He pinched the bridge of his nose and glanced at the clock.
